Why Strength Training Is Usually the Answer for Pain (Not More Rest)

If you’ve ever been injured, there’s a good chance you’ve heard this advice:

And while there’s absolutely a time and place for rest… the truth is, most people don’t actually get better from avoiding movement forever.

At Breathe CrossFit, we see this constantly.

People come into our gym in Derry after:

They’re scared to move because they were told movement is dangerous

Pain Does NOT Always Mean Stop Moving

One of the biggest misconceptions in health and fitness is that pain automatically means:

❌ Stop lifting ❌ Stop moving ❌ Avoid exercise entirely

But most of the time, the body actually needs: ✔️ Better mobility ✔️ More stability ✔️ More strength

99% of the time, the solution is strength training.

The Problem With “Easy Forever”

A lot of people go through physical therapy doing:

At some point, the body needs to get stronger.

If your therapist tells you to do 10 reps, but you could do 100… it’s not challenging enough to get you better.

The goal is building a body that’s resilient.

Why Strength Training Helps Pain

That’s why good physical therapy often looks very similar to personal training.

In fact, the best recovery plans usually include: ✔️ Progressive loading ✔️ Intentional movement ✔️ Gradual increases in intensity

Pregnancy & CrossFit: Another Huge Misunderstanding

This same fear-based mindset happens during pregnancy too.

But pregnancy does NOT automatically mean fragile.

At Breathe CrossFit, we’ve worked with many moms who safely strength trained throughout pregnancy with:

Rest Isn’t Bad — But Too Much Rest Is

But long-term inactivity creates more problems:

The second you feel off, take care of it immediately.

Small issues become bigger issues when ignored.

Strength Training for Longevity

They need: ✔️ Consistency ✔️ Smart strength training ✔️ Guidance ✔️ Movement they can sustain long term

That’s exactly what we focus on at our beginner-friendly CrossFit gym in Derry.

When Should You Actually Rest?

Don’t assume the answer is to stop moving forever.

Because movement is often part of the solution.

The Importance of Finding the Right Coach or Professional

You deserve someone who: ✔️ Listens ✔️ Explains things clearly ✔️ Helps you progress safely ✔️ Encourages long-term strength and health

Not someone who simply tells you: “Don’t do that anymore.”
