Swolemates: Why Your Partner’s Support Matters for Your Fitness Goals
Valentine’s Day is coming, so let’s talk about swolemates.
Your significant other doesn’t have to work out with you.
What a Swolemate Actually Is
A swolemate isn’t someone who trains with you (though that’s a bonus).
✅ Encourages you to go to the gym (even when you’re tired or don’t feel like it)
✅ Doesn’t sabotage your nutrition (stops bringing home donuts when they know you’re trying to stay on track)
✅ Celebrates your PRs (even if they don’t understand what a “snatch” is)
✅ Holds you accountable (calls you out when you’re making excuses)
✅ Respects your time (doesn’t guilt you for spending an hour at the gym)
Why Support Matters
You can’t out-train a lack of support at home.
Making you feel guilty for going to the gym
Questioning why you meal prep or track your food
Rolling their eyes when you talk about fitness
Undermining your goals with comments like “you’re fine the way you are” (when you’ve expressed wanting to change)
Not because they’re a bad person. But because their lack of support makes your goals 10x harder.
The Research Backs This Up
Studies show that people with supportive partners are significantly more likely to:
Because when the motivation fades (and it will), external accountability and support keep you going.
How to Have the Conversation
If your partner isn’t supporting your goals, you need to talk about it.
“I need your support with this. It’s important to me. Here’s how you can help…”
“Please don’t bring home junk food when you know I’m trying to stay on track.”
“Encourage me to go to the gym when I’m making excuses.”
“Ask me about my workouts. It makes me feel like you care.”
Most of the time, they don’t realize they’re being unsupportive. They just don’t know how to help.
If You Have a Swolemate, Appreciate Them
If you have a partner who supports your fitness goals, don’t take it for granted.
Thank them for letting you go to the gym on Saturday mornings, for meal prepping with you, for celebrating your PRs even when they don’t fully understand.
