Murph 2026: What a Memorial Day Workout Says About Community, Strength & Fitness for Real People

Every Memorial Day, CrossFit gyms around the world participate in a workout called Murph.

At first glance, Murph sounds intimidating:

But at Breathe CrossFit, our goal has never been about making workouts intimidating.

It’s about bringing people together to do hard things in a supportive environment.

This year’s Murph at our CrossFit gym in Derry was one of the best examples of that.

What Is Murph?

Murph is a Hero Workout created in honor of Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy, who sacrificed his life serving our country.

The workout itself is challenging by design.

It’s not about setting a new time for the workout. It’s paying tribute.

Real Fitness Means Making It Accessible

One of the biggest misconceptions about CrossFit is that everyone has to do workouts exactly as written.

At Breathe CrossFit, we modify workouts every single day based on:

Why Community Matters More Than Perfection

One of the coolest things about Murph this year wasn’t the workout itself.

Real Member Stories That Matter

This is the stuff people don’t see online.

Steve’s Story

One of our members, Steve, injured his shoulder skiing earlier this year.

After physical therapy and personal training focused on getting stronger safely, he was able to participate in Murph with modifications.

He was able to do that safely because he’s stronger and we made appropriate modifications.

That’s exactly how long-term fitness should work.

Ashley’s Story

Participating alongside her husband and family

That matters because so many women think pregnancy means they should stop moving.

Instead, with the right coaching and modifications, movement can be empowering.

Postpartum Moms Showing Up

We also had postpartum moms participate:

Transitioning from semi-private training into larger classes

That’s important because fitness after having kids can feel intimidating.

But you do NOT need to “get back in shape first.”

The Bigger Lesson: Fitness Is About Longevity

It was also cool to see members still setting goals even if they’ve done this workout several times.

Chris completing Murph in an incredible time

Ashlynn setting a goal to do Murph unpartitioned with a weighted vest next year

The goal is to: ✔️ Stay healthy ✔️ Stay active ✔️ Keep improving ✔️ Keep showing up for years

Fitness Should Bring Families Together

One of the best parts of this year’s event?

Parents. Kids. Husbands and wives. Mothers and daughters.

Fitness becomes much more sustainable when it becomes part of your lifestyle—not punishment.

That’s the environment we work hard to create at our beginner-friendly gym in Derry.
