“I’m Too Out of Shape for CrossFit” (And Why That’s Complete Nonsense)
Have you ever watched a workout video online and thought, “There is no way on earth my body can do that” ?
We get it. You see people lifting heavy barbells, climbing ropes, and doing handstand push-ups at lightning speed. It looks intense, intimidating, and maybe a little crazy.
So, naturally, you tell yourself the most common fitness lie in history:
“I need to get in shape first before I join a gym like that.”
Here is the honest truth from our coaching team at Breathe CrossFit: waiting until you are fit to start working out is like waiting until you speak fluent Italian before you take an Italian class.
You do not get in shape to start. You start so you can get in shape.
If your only exposure to CrossFit is social media highlights, it makes total sense why you might feel nervous. But what happens inside a daily class at Breathe CrossFit looks completely different from what you see on television.
At its core, CrossFit is just functional movement done at an intensity that matches your current ability.
That last part is the most important: your current ability.
In every single session, our coaches use a simple tool called scaling . Scaling just means adapting an exercise so it challenges you safely, protects your joints, and meets you exactly where you are today.
Here is what scaling looks like in real life:
What You Might Do: Ring rows with your feet on the floor, or assisted pull-ups using an elastic band.
What You Might Do: A steady row on the machine or a ride on the stationary bike if your knees need a lower-impact option.
The Whiteboard Says: Heavy Barbell Squats
What You Might Do: Squats to a bench or box with just your body weight while you build up hip mobility and balance.
The goal is never to crush you on day one. The goal is to help you move well, build confidence, and leave the gym feeling better than when you walked in.
When you walk through the doors of our 8,000-square-foot space in Derry, nobody expects you to know the jargon or have perfect technique.
You will never have to wander around wondering what machine to use or if you are doing a movement wrong. Every class is led by an expert coach who warms you up, demonstrates every movement step-by-step, and helps you pick the right weights.
Our members are moms, dads, local teachers, healthcare workers, teenagers, and grandparents in their 60s. Some have been working out for years, while others had not stepped into a gym in a decade before joining us. Nobody is judging you. In fact, they will probably be the first people to say hello and give you a high five after the workout.
If you need to catch your breath, take a break. If a weight feels too heavy, drop it down. You control your pace, and our coaches are there to support your individual progress every step of the way.
At the end of the day, our mission is not about turning you into an elite competitive athlete.
It is about helping you feel capable in your everyday life.
It is about carrying all the grocery bags in one trip without straining your back. It is about running around the backyard with your kids without feeling winded. It is about building strong bones, healthy joints, and real energy that lasts all day.
You do not need to be strong, fast, or flexible to begin. You only need to show up.
If you are feeling nervous, that is completely normal. Almost every single person in our gym felt those exact same butterflies before their first visit.
That is why we never throw you straight into a workout.
Instead, we invite you to come in for a Free No-Sweat Intro .
It is just a relaxed, 20-minute conversation where we sit down, talk about your past fitness experiences, discuss your personal goals, and show you around our facility. No workout clothes needed, no burpees, and zero pressure.
Stop waiting for the “perfect time” to get healthy. You are ready right now.
