Getting Stronger Is the Answer: What Cholesterol, Back Pain & Group Fitness Have in Common
If you’ve ever been told by your doctor that your cholesterol is too high, or you’ve been living with nagging back pain and assumed it was just part of life — this one’s for you. At Breathe CrossFit, we hear these concerns all the time. And more often than not, the solution is simpler — and more empowering — than most people expect.
The Cholesterol Conversation Nobody Warned You About
High cholesterol affects millions of adults, and the typical response from a doctor is a prescription. But there’s a step that too often gets skipped: exercise — specifically, strength training.
We recently worked with a member who joined Breathe CrossFit in January after his doctor gave him an ultimatum: start exercising or go on cholesterol medication. Within just a few months — without any major dietary overhaul — he was able to avoid that medication entirely.
This isn’t a one-off story. Every single person who has walked through our doors with high cholesterol concerns has seen meaningful improvement through consistent training. Why? Because strength training improves how your body processes fats, increases HDL (good) cholesterol, and reduces triglycerides — all without a single pill.
If your doctor is watching your numbers, don’t wait. Start moving. Start lifting. Your body is more capable of healing itself than you may realize.
Back Pain After Having a Baby: It’s Not the Epidural
We’ve heard it more than once recently: “I’ve had back pain since my epidural.” It’s an understandable conclusion — the timing lines up. But here’s the truth: the epidural almost certainly isn’t the culprit.
Postpartum back pain is extremely common, and the real causes are well-documented: changes in body weight, postural shifts from carrying and nursing a newborn, and — most importantly — a weakened core.
And when we say “core,” we don’t just mean your abs. Your glutes are a critical part of your core system. When they’re weak, your lower back takes on more load than it’s designed to handle, and pain follows.
The good news? This is highly fixable. Targeted core strengthening exercises, combined with basic mobility work like cat-cows, can dramatically reduce or completely eliminate back pain. We’ve watched it happen with member after member. You don’t have to live with it — and you definitely don’t have to blame something that can’t be changed.
Why Group Fitness Changes the Game
One of our newest members had been working out alone in her basement for a year following hip surgery. She was moving, which was great — but she wasn’t pushing herself, and she wasn’t confident she was doing things safely or correctly.
That’s the gap group fitness fills. It’s not just about accountability (though that matters enormously). It’s about having a coach watch your movement, correct your form, and push you in ways you simply won’t push yourself alone. It’s about a community that shows up and makes you want to show up too.
The results our members see — improved cholesterol, less pain, more energy, better sleep, stronger bodies — aren’t because of a magic program. They’re because consistency is easier when you’re not doing it alone.
