5 Daily Habits That Keep You Lean Year-Round: Inside Our Spring STEPS Challenge
If you’ve ever finished a fitness challenge feeling great, only to slowly slip back into old patterns a few weeks later — you’re not alone. That cycle is exactly what Breathe CrossFit’s Spring STEPS Challenge is designed to break. Starting April 12th, we’re launching a six-week, habits-based challenge that’s less about crash diets and dramatic transformations, and more about doing the boring, effective stuff — consistently. Because the people who stay fit year-round aren’t doing anything extreme. They’ve just made the basics automatic.
What Is the STEPS Challenge?
STEPS is an acronym for five daily habits that, when done consistently, produce real, lasting results.
S — Step 10,000 or More Steps a Day Movement matters, and daily steps are one of the most underrated tools for fat loss and overall health. Whether you’re hitting the gym or spending a day at home, the goal is to reach 10,000 steps every single day.
Bonus: staying hydrated (more on that below) will naturally get you moving more.
T — Train Intentionally Every Day This doesn’t mean grinding at the gym seven days a week. It means moving with purpose — whether that’s your daily CrossFit class, a strength session, or a focused walk. Rest days become active recovery days. No more “I just didn’t do anything today.”
E — Eat to Your Target We’re not prescribing a one-size-fits-all diet here. You choose the approach that works for you: hit your calorie goals, follow a macro split (40/30/30 is a great starting point for fat loss), take on a Whole30, or simply commit to a specific habit like cutting out soda or late-night snacking. The key is picking a target and sticking to it for six weeks.
P — Personal Growth for 10 Minutes a Day This is the piece most fitness challenges ignore — and it’s one of the most powerful. Set a 10-minute timer every day to work on something that matters to you: a CrossFit skill you want to improve, a mobility routine you keep skipping, or a book you’ve been meaning to read. Small, consistent investments compound into real progress.
S — Sip at Least Half Your Body Weight in Ounces of Water If you weigh 160 lbs, your daily goal is 80 ounces of water. Hydration affects energy, recovery, hunger signals, and performance. Most people aren’t hitting this number. The first week might feel like a lot — your body will adjust within two weeks, and you’ll feel the difference.
How Does the Challenge Work?
Every day, you have five opportunities to earn points — one for each STEPS habit completed. Hit all five? Five points. Hit four? Four points. At the end of six weeks, the five most consistent participants win. We use a shared spreadsheet so you can see your progress in real time. The tracking is non-negotiable — and it’s a feature, not a bug. The people who do see the most progress are the people who track. You don’t have to count every calorie, but you do need to pay attention to what you’re doing.
Why Habits — Not a Quick Fix?
Our last challenge (the 50/50 Fat Loss Challenge) was a massive success — Loralee walked away with $1,025 after losing the most fat in pounds. But this challenge takes a different approach. Sustainable fat loss and lasting fitness don’t come from six intense weeks followed by a return to old habits. They come from making five simple things second nature. When steps, intentional training, eating well, personal growth, and hydration are just part of your normal day — you stop needing challenges to stay on track. Whether you’re a longtime Breathe CrossFit member or you’ve been thinking about starting your fitness journey, this challenge is built for you.
